This concert series is made possible from a generous gift from Dean Miller on behalf of his wife, the late Martha Swift. Martha and Dean were patrons of our concerts at World Folk since our first concert featuring Art Thieme in 1997.
Martha was born in 1934 to Janet Herriott and Clifton White. After her parents’ divorce, she was adopted by Na- than Butler Swift Jr., her mothers second husband. Martha was educated at the Lor- ing School in Beverly, Northwestern U., and had Master’s degree from St. Xavier’s College. Her special interest was language (especially French) and literature.
She eventually taught languages at Morgan Park Academy, and was head of the Language Department there for several years. Always attuned to the needs of our neighborhood,
Martha worked tirelessly with the Ridge Historical Society. She had one son, John Hall Swift, from her first marriage, which ended in 1964. In 1980 she married Dean Arthur Miller, a professor of history, whom she met at Northwestern many years before.
Martha's travels brought her to France, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Bel- gium and Finland. Her other enthusiasms were music (she played piano and pipe organ), family genealogy, her Scottish roots, puns, and the human comedy. She learned to yodel-not a common talent. Sadly, we lost Martha in November of 2015. Live music at The Castle and Heritage Gallery continue in her honor.
